Clinical Pilates vs mat Pilates: what’s the difference?
July 20, 2026
Pilates has become a popular way to build strength and move with more control. If you have seen both Clinical Pilates and general mat Pilates classes advertised, here is how they differ.
General mat Pilates
Mat Pilates classes are usually run in larger groups and follow a set sequence for general fitness and core strength. They are a great option if you are generally healthy and looking to move more.
Clinical Pilates
Clinical Pilates is guided by a trained practitioner and tailored to you, often using a reformer as well as the mat. Sessions are kept small so you get real attention, and exercises are chosen around your body, your goals and any injuries or conditions.
Which is right for me?
If you are recovering from an injury, managing a condition, pregnant or postnatal, or simply want closer guidance, Clinical Pilates is often the better starting point. Many people begin with an individual assessment and then move into small guided classes as their confidence grows.
Getting started at The Wellness Place
Our Clinical Pilates in Bassendean starts with an assessment so your sessions are safe and suited to you. We can also set up home exercises so you keep building between classes.
